The
Divinity Library
December 2008 Report
Highlights
of the Month
The Divinity Library hosted their annual
Holiday Open House on December 9th. Library Staff provided food and
drink for tables in the public area. All were welcome who made their
way to the second floor of the GLB.
The Divinity Library Christmas lunch was
held at Martha's at the Plantation. The feast was dutch this year, but
every bit as enjoyable. Frank Grishom and Dot Parks Evins were our special
guests.
Administration
Bill was contacted by a donor who offered to
send us some of the papers and sermons of John Benton, former Dean of
the Divinity School. The materials were received shortly before Christmas
and comprise the first papers of Dean Benton that will be added to the
university archives. Bill was also able to work through the inventory
of materials donated years ago by Professor Lou Silberman, consisting
of materials from his participation in the Jesus Seminar. Silberman's
materials and the Benton papers were transferred to Special Collections
at the end of December.
Bill and Lisa Shipman met with Penny Frere of
TENN-SHARE about possibly hosting the February TENN-SHARE board meeting.
As a result of conversations with Tracy Primich in Science, the American
Chemical Society approached Vanderbilt about developing a multi-state
consortium to help develop a package for ACS materials. Bill suggested
that TENN-SHARE might be the logical resolution in December. TENN-SHARE
will manage the ACS package for Tennessee libraries and a number of
Kentucky libraries as well.
Bill was contacted by the GDR and Divinity Library
alum, Stephen King, regarding his interest in establishing an online
Chaplains journal. Bill is investigating whether the Vanderbilt Library's
OJS system (that will host the new electronic version of the journal
of the Academy of Homiletics, Homiletic), will also be a suitable
platform for the Chaplains journal.
Donna Smith arranged for the hanging of the green
and scheduled our Christmas lunch at Martha's.
Public Services
Chris Benda
published a review in the new open source online journal of the American
Theological Library Association Theological Librarianship. His
review of Masterplots II : Christian Literature, ed. by
John K. Roth, can be read here.
Mat Trotter and
Sarah Dryden were occupied by end of the semester patron activity
and filling in the lost hours from students unable to work their shifts
during exams. Fall reserves were removed at the end of the month and
spring reserves were added.
Mat created week by
week circulation schedules to carry the library through the end of the
month and the beginning of January.
Chris, Jill, Mat and
Eileen participated in library tours for prospective students.
Collection Development
Eileen continued to
work on identifying SSO's to switch to firm orders and periodicals to
cancel. A list of SSO and periodical titles that had been selected in
each of the ten subject areas were sent to Divinity and GDR faculty
for their input. Charlotte assisted with this project.
Eileen spent considerable
time as secretary of the ATLA Board, writing reports and emails in preparation
for the January meeting of the Board in Chicago.
Technical Services
Jill Brown focused
on cataloging SSO's and member copy, while Charlotte kept up
with the LC material.
Charlotte filled
in for an absent student, received periodicals, and did shelf reading
in preparation for sending periodicals to the bindery.
Charlotte received
a donation of journals from Professor Doug Knight after Christmas. Most
of the titles are already in our collection. Charlotte has boxed them
in preparation for transferring them to the Theological
Book Network, an organization that distributes material to theological
libraries in the majority world.
