Student will work on reviewing and updating research guides, play a significant role in a periodical subscription review project, and spend time at the library’s service desk. This is an opportunity to increase collection development skills, gain practical experience providing circulation and basic reference services, and a chance to become familiar with business information resources.

Peabody
Library owns a small collection [@2500 vols.] of historical K-12 textbooks from
mid-1800 to mid-1900. The Center for Research Libraries has identified specific
titles from the collection that they would like to add to their collection.
In order
to prepare the books for shipping to CRL, the following work needs to be done:
1. Cleaning the remaining books in the
lower vault area
2. Selecting the titles identified by
CRL
3. Putting the books in call number
order, adding an archival strip with the call number on it
4. Pulling the shelf list cards for the
titles to be sent with the books
There is
no specific semester when this practicum must take place.

If you are
interested in gaining experience working in a small academic library, you might
be interested in this practicum involving reference assistance, instruction,
and assessment. Approximately 5
hours/week would be spent on the service desk.
The Peabody Library has a combined reference/circulation desk and
service involves all types of library questions (reference, technology,
circulation, etc.). The balance of time
would be devoted to supporting instruction, including EndNote and first-year
information literacy training opportunities (including individual research
consultations), and in proctoring information and computer literacy assessments
(Collegiate Learning Assessment) that are offered annually to Peabody first years and seniors. Additionally,
small collection development projects will be available for students to take as
time allows. At the completion of the semester, the practicum student should
come away with an idea of how a small academic library operates and have at
least one small project to add to his or her resume. This practicum is
available each semester.

Television News Archive Practicum
Posting
Date: August 2008
The Vanderbilt Television News Archive offers a variety of activities that would offer an enriching experience for a student in the LIS program at the University of Tennessee. This unit of the library is the most comprehensive archive of US national news broadcasts in the world. It preserves and provides access to a collection of 40,000 hours of digital video content, recorded from the major US television networks.
The Archive offers LIS students a practicum that can be shaped according to individual interests and current projects underway. Components of the practicum can be selected from the following menu of options and activities:
The practicum will provide opportunity for the student to gain expertise in digital video technologies, current standards for rich media content and metadata, and in providing services to Archive users related to the content of the collection and the delivery options possible. The Archive is engaged in issues involving digital preservation in partnership with the Library of Congress.
The Archive operates in a complex environment relative to copyright, exposing practicum students to an interesting suite of intellectual property issues.
The Archive supports its operations through fees that it charges for loan requests and annual subscription fees. Practicum students will gain the experience of working in an entrepreneurial environment and will have opportunities to assist and provide input into the marketing and promotion of the Archive’s services.
The majority of the Archive’s use occurs through its Web site, which provides a search interface into its collection of 880,000 news items, an e-commerce interface for requests and fulfillment of physical loans, and for delivery of streaming video when applicable. One aspect of the practicum will involve assessment of the Web site and suggestions for its continued development.
