NON-PRINT MEDIA
– ELECTRONIC JOURNALS
Step 1: Answer these three questions:
§ Do we own the journal currently in print? (If no, go to step 2)
§ If so, does the ejournal subscription incur no further expense? (If no, email Anne about the title – it may be decided to add it and Anne will email MAT about this exception.)
§ If so, can it be accessed without a password? (If no, email Anne about the title – it may be decided to add it and Anne will email MAT about this exception.)
§ If so, is it full text, at least one year, and full issues?
If so, then MAT will be notified via email by anyone on the professional staff to add the URL to the print record.
If MAT discovers the title through her serials work, she may proceed to add it.
MAT will add the URL using the procedure for “Added to Print Version” found in the URLs below:
For Proquest, Project Muse, Catchword, and Ingenta titles, and other titles for which access is restricted to VU users:
http://divinity.library.vanderbilt.edu/staffweb/techservices/E-JOURNALS.htm
For titles that are available to all users without restrictions:
http://divinity.library.vanderbilt.edu/staffweb/techservices/E-JournalsnotPM.htm
The last step in the process will be for MAT compile these added titles and include them in the LMC monthly report contribution and the Communicator on a monthly basis.
Step 2: We do not own the journal currently in print. In these cases, the ejournal will be evaluated by the bibliographer according to the following criteria. The bibliographer will share this evaluation with Anne. Anne will then decide whether to add the title to the collection.
Issues to consider when selecting an electronic journal:
§ Important for the program area? Which program area?
§ Is there an extra cost associated with it?
§ Indexed in ATLA Religion Database?
§ Full text?
§ Index or abstracts only? If so, is it valuable without the full text?
§ At least a full year of coverage?
§ Issues complete, rather than selected articles?
§ Password/subscription needed?
§ Through what vendor can it be accessed? and what is the URL that will link to that vendor?
§ Restricted to Vanderbilt users only?
Step 3: The new title is added to the collection in this way:
Is the new title free? If yes, Anne will submit a request to Eileen to catalog the title, using the form at this URL, according to the process in Step 4. If a title is submitted that is not full text (abstracts, indexes, etc.), then Anne will include that information in the free text comments box of the form.
http://staffweb.library.vanderbilt.edu/rs/newres.html
If no, Anne will submit an order to RS for acquisition of the title. RS will add a record to ACORN with Internet Library and Divinity as holding libraries. When the first issue of this title is received, MAT will process it according to procedures. MAT will compile these added titles and include them in the LMC monthly report contribution and the Communicator on a monthly basis.
Step 4: Eileen will receive the cataloging request and process it accordingly, using the following procedures:
For titles that are not Proquest and Project Muse: (access not restricted)
http://divinity.library.vanderbilt.edu/staffweb/techservices/E-JournalsnotPM.htm
For Proquest, Project Muse and other titles for which access is restricted to VU users:
http://divinity.library.vanderbilt.edu/staffweb/techservices/E-JOURNALS.htm
The last step in the process will be for Eileen to compile these added titles and include them in the LMC monthly report contribution and the Communicator on a monthly basis.
