COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY
Videos fall into three categories:
1. Faculty requests: These are always purchased if the price is not too high ($250 is about our top limit) and they are clearly appropriate for our library as opposed to Central’s collection, from the subject and academic level standpoint. The rate of collection is about 5-6 per year in this category.
2. Patron requests: These are often purchased if the price is not too high ($100 is about the top limit) and they are clearly appropriate for our library. We may buy more popular titles occasionally by request, but the titles will more likely be PBS specials or A&E specials that patrons have seen on television and then recommend to us. The rate of collection is about 3-4 per year.
3. Bibliographer requests: These are carefully evaluated by the collections librarian. IN the past, some bibliographers have been aggressive in video purchases, and this should not occur. The collections librarian should help the bibliographers carefully evaluate the quality and appropriateness of any video requests. The rate of collection will vary from year to year, but a target range of 20 titles (not items; many of these are multi-piece sets) seems reasonable. At the same time, the collections librarian should pay close attention to the release of video titles, as they are quite popular with our patrons. Wise purchases that will be useful for several years enhance the teaching and learning potential of our collection.
Videos have their own MARC format, but are handled very much like books. They usually arrive from Baker mixed in boxes along with books. Videos are routed directly to Eileen to catalog.
Fields different from MARC for books.
