Circulation News for October 5, 2000
1) Help Wanted
Due to the infamous 20hr./wk for CWS students rule, Grace will be cutting back her hours at the library. I will need additional help on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and possibly other weeknights. If no one from the current staff wants these hours, I will put an ad in the Communicator. You are welcome to let your friends know about this opening, if you think that they would be interested in working here.
Considering the pinch that the library is in, the 10 hr./wk guideline for 1st year students is removed and 1st semester students can work more time. However, if you take some of these extra hours with a Saturday rotation, we will need to work together to make sure that you do not go over the CWS limit of 20 hours/week.
2) Sandra's Office Time
I will need to make some changes to how we handle service and assistance requests during my office time (time when I am not working at Infodesk).
I am having trouble completing my tasks because of service-related interruptions. I have discussed the problem with Anne, and we have agreed that when I am in my office, this time needs to be treated as if I am in a meeting, or otherwise unavailable for direct assistance.
For example, if a patron comes in with a billing issue, and I am not at the infodesk, use the Problem Report Form. If the patron is upset, then go ahead and call me in my office to let me know that you are sending the patron over. Please do not bring patrons to my office without "warning" me in advance.
This will be difficult for ME to follow as well. You all know of my tendency to "hover" or "jump in" to handling a problem. However, these changes are necessary as my work responsibilities change, and I have more to deal with.
3) Circulation Phone List
Everyone should have gotten a yellow sheet in his/her Library mailbox that has phone numbers for those that work in Circulation.
Even after the Divinity School directory comes out, please keep the Circulation Phone List with you. On the back is a set of directions for handling being late or missing a shift.
THERE IS A CORRECTION:
For E/W Supervisors, your instructions for when you are missing desk staff on Weekends include calling Anne and other full-time staff, if you cannot reach me. Please SKIP THIS STEP, and proceed immediately to calling other Circulation student workers to find someone to help you.
4) Cecilia Tolley
Cecilia will be joining us next week. She will work Fridays from 10 am. - 1 p.m. She will also work a few hours for Bob Howard, on a Library microfilming project.
