Micro-Readers

If Micro Readers are all in use

Occasionally during the semester, more than two patrons at a time will want to use the microform machines. Please feel free to direct them to the Microform and Media reading room on the 6th floor in Central. Since film/fiche often can not be charged out, patrons going to the 6th floor to read should take the elevator. Remind the patrons to bring the items back downstairs when they have finished reading.

Negative Cartridges in the Micro-Reader

If a person using a micro-reader needs a negative cartridge (for fiche or film where the print is white on black), change the cartridge and flip the switch at the rear of the machine to the "down" position. When the patron is finished, remove the negative cartridge and replace with a positive cartridge. Flip the switch at the rear end of the machine to the "up" position.

Changing lenses on the Fiche Reader

Grasp the handles on either side of the lens and pull the lens gently towards yourself. The replacement lens should glide easily along its tracks if you have installed it properly. You will need to lift the front edge of the lens slightly to get it over the glass plate on the carrier. Extra lenses are located on the shelves behind the circulation desk.

Changing Carriers

We have two microfilm carriers and one microfiche carrier.  These are interchangeable on the two machines. To swap out carriers, rotate the carrier so that the hitch is in the front. Gently slide the carrier towards you along the track until you have completely removed it. The microfilm carrier has a cord that connects it to the machine. Be sure to connect or disconnect this cord from its socket (on the left side of the machine) whenever you swap carriers. When replacing the carrier, be sure to line up the tracks with the hitch in the front; after replacing it, rotate the carrier back to its correct position.

General Information on the Readers

Always store extra cartridges either in the cartridge case or beside the machine on the floor. Cartridges should always lie flat as ink may spill out when stored vertically. If a cartridge runs out of ink, simply tag it as empty, and replace it with an extra cartridge. If we have no extra cartridges, beep Glenn as above. If Glenn is not available, see Central Circulation. They have the key to Glenn’s copy service storage carrel.

Also, when replacing paper in the trays for the micro-film/fiche readers, pay attention to the direction of the paper. There is a right and wrong side to the paper, as the arrow will explain on the paper wrapper. If it is put in the wrong way, misfeeds and jams are more likely to occur.
